Johannes (/johanəs/; yo-hunn-is) is a barrister and Nationally Accredited Mediator, practising exclusively in family law, which he has done for over a decade.

Photograph of Johannes SchmidtWhilst Johannes usually appears unled, he has also undertaken junior briefs to many of Melbourne’s leading family law silks.  In addition to appearance work, Johannes has a substantial advice and paperwork practice.

Johannes’s clients benefit from his excellent communication and problem-solving skills, and a highly numerate and commercial approach.

Prior to being called to the Bar in 2017, Johannes was a solicitor at a first-tier specialist family law firm for over 5 years.

In 2014, Johannes graduated with a Master of Laws (Applied Law) degree majoring in family law, and was awarded the Sandra Paul Memorial Prize for the Best Graduating Student.  He also holds Bachelor degrees with honours from Monash University in both Law and Software Engineering.

Prior to coming to the law, Johannes ran a software engineering consultancy, and taught undergraduate computer science and software engineering at Monash University.

Johannes is a member of the Family Law Bar Association, the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, and the Australian Institute of Family Law Arbitrators and Mediators.

He is fluent in German.
